Suspenision Bridges

Humans have always been explorers. Bridges let us reach distant lands. The Romans were the great bridge builders in the ancient world so they had their own style. Later other cultures invented their own bridge types, for example, the Tibetans used iron chains instead of vines.

James Finely, an Irish immigrant, born in 1756 became very involved in numerous road-building projects. He reviewed bridge design proposals and used knowledge of ancient bridges to design efficient models. After years of experimenting, he build a bridge in 1801 that spanned 70 feet. Finley published hi patent design in magazines. Many others began using his design. His design spread through Britain through publications and the first bridge of Britain was built in 1820 using his design.

Bridges reduced travel time and shipping costs and from then on people continued to build bridges.
